International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day, celebrated on June 28th, is a day to reflect on the progress made in securing rights, and on the challenges that still need to be faced to guarantee equality, respect, and dignity for everyone. The date traces back to the Stonewall Riots, which took place in New York in 1969, a historic milestone in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Over the past few decades, Brazil has made important progress in recognizing these rights. One key milestone was the Brazilian Supreme Court’s (STF) 2011 decision recognizing same-sex unions as a family entity. In 2026, that decision turns 15 years old and stands as one of the most important legal milestones in promoting equality, having expanded family rights and strengthened legal protection for thousands of people.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Discrimination is still present in different contexts, including online. Hate speech, targeted attacks, improper exposure of personal data, and other forms of online violence directly affect fundamental rights like privacy, safety, and the dignity of LGBTQIA+ people.

In this context, organizations’ commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion becomes even more important. Building safe and respectful environments takes more than just meeting legal obligations, it requires ongoing policies, spaces for dialogue, and initiatives that strengthen a culture of respect for differences.

At APSV Advogados, this commitment is part of how we operate as an institution. The firm has adopted a Human Rights, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy and is a signatory to Principle 6 of the UN Global Compact, which calls for eliminating discrimination in the workplace. The firm also runs DIV3RSA, a group focused on active listening, dialogue, and building initiatives together that encourage a sense of belonging and appreciation for diversity.

Celebrating International LGBTQIA+ Pride Day means recognizing what’s been achieved, while keeping sight of the progress still needed. Building a fairer society depends on defending fundamental rights, promoting equality, and a collective commitment so that everyone can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.
