Federal Government Extends Mandatory Georeferencing Deadline for Rural Properties to October 2029
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming (MDA), announced an extension of the deadline for mandatory georeferencing of rural properties to 2029. The measure was published in October 2025 and aims to make land regularization easier and cut red tape around land access, especially for small-scale producers.
What is georeferencing?
It’s the technical process of defining a rural property’s exact boundaries using geographic coordinates, required whenever a property is registered or its registration is updated at the real estate registry office. This requirement was established under Law No. 10,267/2001 and regulated by INCRA (Brazil’s National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform).
Why does this extension matter?
- More time to comply: Rural property owners now have extra time to bring their properties up to legal requirements.
- Lower costs and fewer technical hurdles: This especially benefits small producers who struggle to hire specialized technical services.
- Legal certainty: It helps prevent real estate transactions from being blocked due to missing georeferencing.
Extending the deadline to 2029 is a step forward for land access policy and agrarian justice. It’s essential for property owners and professionals in the field to stay on top of the new deadlines and technical requirements to keep rural properties legally compliant.
